Intent

Mathematics is important in everyday life and, with this is mind, the purpose of Mathematics at Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All children are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. We aim to create children who are confident and have a love of learning Maths.

Implementation

To achieve this, we deliver a mastery approach to the curriculum by following a concrete, pictorial and abstract pathway. Topics are introduced using a variety of representations and highlighting key misconceptions before they arise. Concrete manipulatives are used to introduce new concepts throughout the school to allow children to physically explore their learning. This is accompanied by pictorial representations which allow children to make connections between concrete and abstract. When children are competent, abstract concepts will be introduced. Opportunities are built in for children to master their fluency, key instant recall facts, reasoning and problem solving in each strand of the curriculum. Arithmetic and basic mathematical skills are practised daily to ensure key concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.

Staff follow the White Rose scheme and adapt where necessary to suit their unique class situations to ensure all areas have been covered with sufficient depth. Our aim is to develop a growth mind set so all children feel they can achieve.

Impact

The children at Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement in Maths. They develop a solid sense of number, become fluent in the fundamentals in maths and are confident in their mental maths abilities. Our children can discuss maths using the appropriate vocabulary, showing a deeper understanding of the subject and the ability to reason about mathematics. They see the value of mathematics in their daily lives and appreciate how maths is used across many subject areas.
