history

Intent

At Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School we want to encourage children to develop a keen interest in the past, whilst arousing their curiosity and motivation to learn. As young Historians, children will gain knowledge and understanding of their own history, the history of Scunthorpe and its surrounding areas, the history of Britain and the wider world.

They will develop their knowledge and understanding of chronology within and beyond living memory and learn how history has influenced our lives today. We want to support children to develop a sense of identity and know where they belong in time. We want to help children make thoughtful and competent judgements based on their developing knowledge and understanding.

Ultimately we want to bring history to life for our children by providing them with exciting opportunities to explore history both in the classroom and through hands on experiences and educational visits.

Implementation

Our history curriculum is underpinned by the Development Matters document 2021 and the National Curriculum 2014, alongside carefully selected topics which run on a two year cycle. This ensures that progression in history for the children at Enderby Road starts from Nursery and will guide them into KS2.

Children are encouraged to research, investigate and make their own conclusions through well planned lessons and opportunities to explore history through a wide range of resources including; written, visual, oral, and historical artefacts. Our school has a clear focus on the development of speech and language. During each of our chosen topics the children revisit subject based vocabulary whilst being introduced to new vocabulary linked to that topic.

Through explicit lessons, cross curricular links and regular revisits to knowledge previously acquired ‘sticky knowledge’ history is interwoven throughout our curriculum.
