geography

Intent

At Enderby Road Infant School and Nursery, we recognise that Geography gives children the necessary knowledge and skills for developing a greater understanding of their local area and the wider world. Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. The curriculum at Enderby Road enables children to develop knowledge and understanding consistently each year through a variety of learning focuses. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. It also offers opportunities to gain skills relevant to other areas of the curriculum. As pupils progress from EYFS through KS1, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of physical and human geography which can follow them into their KS2 journey. At Enderby Road, we seek to inspire our children to become curious about the world around them and the people in it that will continue with them as they grow, giving them key skills that can help them in education and beyond.

Implementation

Geography at Enderby Road is woven through our themed learning in each cycle, so that children have the chance to gain a deeper understanding over time. Key objectives have been identified for each curriculum focus along with skills that should be applied when targeting them. Our two year cycle allows for teachers to understand what children have already investigated and where their learning can be deepened. This knowledge informs our programme of study and ensures that lessons are progressive, relevant and interesting for our children. Cross curricular outcomes in geography are specifically planned for, with strong links between geography, history and literacy lessons identified, planned for and utilised. Using our mascot, Mr Blue Tack Man, to investigate the world we build a love and understanding of Geography that begins from EYFS. We continue to grow our understanding of new, engaging methods to improve the learning experience and use our outdoor environment to support with achieving the outcomes we strive for.

Impact

The geography journey we offer our children across the curriculum introduces them to new and exciting parts of the world. The ambitions they have for travelling and understanding new cultures are increased with the variety of locations they learn about. By encouraging the enjoyment and engagement in geography, children will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that will allow them to fulfil their potential as geographers and explorers. By the time the children leave Enderby Road Infant School they will be able to:

  • Recognise and name continents and oceans of the world.
  • Name cities on different continents.
  • Name landmarks the capital cities of the UK
  • An awareness of their own local community and what is in it.
  • Gain field skills that they can use to investigate their own environment.

By the time they leave Enderby Road Infant School our children will have the understanding and interest to make them future cartographers, planners, meteorologists, conservationists, geologists, researchers and ecologists.
