Intent

At Enderby Road Infant School and Nursery, we aim to provide a Design and Technology curriculum that immerses pupils in learning that is memorable, engaging and meaningful. We provide inclusive opportunities for all children to design and make products that are imaginative and purposeful. Children are encouraged to examine and evaluate existing products so they are able to develop a deeper understanding of the way things work. Our curriculum enables pupils to acquire and develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary they need to be successful designers and makers. Through our curriculum, all children should leave our school with the willingness to take creative risks in order to develop fantastic products and be able to evaluate and perfect their ideas.

Implementation

At Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School, the Design and Technology curriculum is taught through our topic based curriculum over a 2 year cycle. Our KS1 objectives are taken from the National Curriculum and subject mapping ensures all areas and covered equally.  In the EYFS curriculum, children are taught to safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques both as a class and independently through their continuous provision.  They think about uses and purposes, represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through DT when making.

At our school, KS1 DT lessons follow the structure of investigate, design, create and evaluate. Children are given the opportunity to evaluate and investigate existing products before using their creativity to design then make their own. They are then encouraged to evaluate their own and other’s work in a constructive way.  Within lessons, we give children the opportunity to work individually, in pairs and in group situations. Teachers provide engaging and exciting practical lessons where children have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials and resources, and are supported to use tools and equipment safely and responsibly.

Pupils are taught:

  1. To take inspiration from existing products and to appreciate how they have developed over time.
  2. Design, evaluate and improve – developing the process of design thinking and seeing design as a process.
  3. Practical skills – developing the skills needed to make high quality purposeful products safely.
  4. To be safe with a range of tools and to follow hygiene routines when preparing food.

Impact

At Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School, we strive to ensure all our pupils reach or exceed their potential in line with their varied starting points in all areas of the curriculum. We judge the success of our Design and technology curriculum through

A clear progression of skills from nursery through to year 2.

Pupil voice: we consider the following questions - Are children happy and engaged with their learning? Are they challenged and motivated to succeed? Can they clearly express their opinions about the subject?

Work: photographs and written pieces presented both in individual books and class floorbooks that show a clear progression of skills.
