Intent
At Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School, we recognise that our children are living in a world surrounded by devices, and technology is changing the lives of everyone. Through teaching computing we equip our children to participate in a rapidly changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology.
We want our pupils to be able to thrive as digital citizens, who are confident and competent using a range of technology positively, responsibly and safely. We want our pupils to understand that there is always a choice with using technology and we utilise technology (including social media) to model positive use. We recognise that the best prevention for a lot of issues we currently see with technology and social media is through education.
Our overarching aim is to build the foundations of these skills through EYFS to the end of KS1 to a suitable level in preparation for KS2 and looking even further for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
Implementation
All of our Children begin their computing education using purple mash in order to learn skills and programs. This is then embedded in their learning through our creative curriculum.
Our computing curriculum recognises that the key skills and foundations of Computing are taught as a discrete subject and these skills are then developed by being woven through other areas of the curriculum.
Many of the skills are transferrable which provides a wealth of learning opportunities across the curriculum subjects including Art, D&T, Maths, Geography, Science, and English. Computing is taught once a week discretely and as regularly as possible in support of other areas of learning across the school.
In the Foundation Stage Computing is taught as a part of our curriculum. Despite Technology being removed from the ‘Understanding the World’ area of the Early Years curriculum we feel this is an essential part of their development.
The children will recognise that technology is used across the whole school.
Our children have access to laptops and iPads, they have iPods to take photographs and videos and also floor robots to begin experimenting with control and algorithms in Computer Science.
Computer Science teaches the principles of information and computation.
It involves creating and debugging simple programs using algorithms, we introduce the language of Computer Science in different contexts. We begin with using precise verbal instructions (algorithms) to carry out classroom routines or explain how to plant a seed. We then move on to using the Beebots and then creating their own game on Purple Mash using coding. The children will need to ‘fix’ their games and Beebot programs as they go wrong, ‘debugging’ their own algorithms.
Impact
After the implementation of this robust computing curriculum, children at Enderby Road Infant and Nursery School will be digitally literate and able to join the rest of the world on its digital platform. They will be equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively, but more importantly – safely. One of the biggest factors for our children is that they understand the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online.
